Favorite Israeli gem

My favorite site in Israel is Masada. People tend to relate it as a tragic historical story, but I see it as a symbolic triumphant lesson. The small group of Jewish men, women, and children were under siege by the Romans for three years, and knew that one way or another, the Romans (then, the mightiest superpower ruling most of the world) would have the upper hand. They must have felt they were the last living Jews on earth. Fast forward two thousand years: the Romans are gone, as are the many other powerful empires who ruled this country. The Jews did not only survive; they actually established their own independent state, which is striving in every possible aspect. It took two millennia, but we won.
